External conditions – climate, light, heat, cold, location – may change materials into something new and unexpected. Expand and Contract thinks about photographic practice in similar terms, exploring how the melding (or separation) of various materials and perspectives may shift our sensorial experience.
Beyond its materiality, photography finds itself in the most public and the fiercely private arenas – from popular media to institutional archives, art institutions, commercial spaces, on official documentation, or in precious family albums. In that sense, photography can be seen through its ability to function in and with various fields of practice, systems and discourses.
The focus of the exhibition on experimental photography reflects a growing interest among the global photographic community, to immerse in and expand further the ways in which we think about, experience and understand our relationship with the photographic image. This international exhibition positions experimental practice at its core, exploring photography beyond traditional definitions, whether those are reflected in the creative process, or in the presentation of the work in the exhibition space.
